The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao opened its doors in 1997 through a partnership between the Basque Institutions and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. Designed by acclaimed architect Frank Gehry, the museum's sculpture-like building — made of titanium, limestone, and glass — has been hailed as a feat of modern and deconstructivist architecture (though Gehry rejects that second label). The mesmerizing edifice, which helped to revitalize the city, sparks a conversation with the modern and contemporary art exhibitions that are showcased within its walls.

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao serves as part of the Guggenheim Network, which allows it to access holdings from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi (slated to open in 2025). Through this network, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao shares resources, exhibitions, and collections while offering an compelling view of modern and contemporary art.
