The 92nd Street Y was established in 1874 by a group of German Jews looking to serve the social and spiritual needs of the Jewish community in New York. Since then, it has grown into a multicultural sanctuary for all things arts and education. The 92nd Street Y promotes individual and family development and participation in civic life within the context of Jewish values and American pluralism.

As a nonprofit community and cultural center, The 92nd Street Y seeks to create, provide, and disseminate programs of distinction that promote physical and mental health, foster educational and spiritual growth, and provide joy through all stages of a person's life.

The center offers hundreds of virtual and in-person classes and exceptional, groundbreaking programs to over 300,000 people annually in a multitude of areas, including the performing and visual arts, literature, adult and children's education, health, Jewish life, and more. 92nd Street Y reaches out beyond its core constituency of American Jews to serve people of diverse racial, religious, ethnic, and economic backgrounds, seeking partnerships that leaven the center's programs and broaden their influence.
