Founded in 1869, the American Museum of Natural History's global mission is "To discover, interpret, and disseminate—through scientific research and education—knowledge about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe."

A Field Guide to the Entire Planet

American Museum of Natural History

Founded nearly 150 years ago, the AMNH is committed to both inspiring and educating the general public through exhibits, as well as the various educational programs that include professional development workshops and institutes for educators, after-school courses for students, and cultural programs for families. AMNH continues its deep commitment to science education, developing a vibrant community of learners and enhancing the science literacy of a broad spectrum of the public, providing what it calls an accessible "field guide to the entire planet."  This commitment includes the Center for Science Teaching and Learning, providing programs focused on supporting science teaching and learning among students and within the K-12 formal education system, and professional development for some 4,000 teachers annually; the Center for Lifelong Learning, offering a variety of out-of-school programs for children and students, and public programs for families and adults; and the National Center for Science Literacy, Education, and Technology, creating content and strategies that take AMNH's scientific knowledge, collections, and science education to schools, homes, and communities nationwide.
