Connecting Artists to Nature

Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency

The Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency (JTHAR) was established in 2007 to give artists the time and space to create against the backdrop of a spectacular national park at the intersection of the Mojave and Colorado Deserts. The program is designed to nurture creativity, experimentation, reflection, and cultural exchange with the local community.

The seven-week summer residencies include scholarship funds, living accommodations, and studio space, and JTHAR offers year-round monthly residencies as well. Residents live in one of five mountain-view homes that are located just outside Joshua Tree National Park, known for its spiky-leafed yucca trees and giant rock formations. JTHAR invites professional and amateur artists across all media — including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, film, video, new media, installation, writing, and architecture — to apply to the program.
