Rijksmuseum

Founded in 1897 in The Hague, the Rijksmuseum moved to Amsterdam in 1808. The current building, which opened in 1885, showcases more than 8,000 works of art dating back to medieval times. While the collection is focused on Dutch paintings, prints, drawings, history, sculpture, and applied arts — including masterworks by Rembrandt, Vincent van Gogh, Judith Leyster, and Johannes Vermeer — it also contains notable Asian pieces as well as other foreign art. In addition, the Rijksmuseum boasts an impressive collection of works on paper, including 700,000 prints, 150,000 photographs, nearly 50,000 drawings, and a library with 450,000-plus books, periodicals, and sales catalogues.
