LA Opera Resurrects Bach's Sacred Masterpiece St. Matthew Passion

A balletic interpretation of the revered Baroque work is being brought to life at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles.

Conducted by LA Opera music director James Conlon, with choreography, staging, and design by Hamburg Ballet artistic director John Neumeier, the LA Opera's performance of St. Matthew Passion from March 12 to March 27 combines the best of music, dance, and art, and features dancers from the Hamburg Ballet.

Composed in 1727 by Johann Sebastian Bach, St. Matthew Passion is considered one of the most famous and enthralling sacred oratorios. Bach's interpretation of Jesus Christ's last days and impending crucifixion is regarded by scholars as a masterpiece of Western sacred music. GRoW is honored to support LA Opera in its production of St. Matthew Passion. Tickets are now on sale on the LA Opera website.
