Loving Hands Community Care, Inc.

Loving Hands Community Care, Inc. is a nonprofit organization based in Watts that provides support and aid to mothers and families who have experienced the death of a child as the result of gang violence or trauma.

In the News – Annual Mother’s Day Healing Luncheon

On May 12, 2018, Loving Hands hosted their annual Mother’s Day Healing Luncheon. This year marked the 10th anniversary of the event. Every year since its founding, Kathy Wooten’s organization has hosted this Luncheon to provide comfort to bereaved mothers during a painful holiday. Over the course of the day, the mothers were pampered, inspired, and most importantly, supported by a wider community of women who have also experienced the loss of a child. Through listening to speakers, participating in dialogues, and attending artistic performances, these mothers were given a space to openly grieve, remember their loved ones and imagine a way forward. By reminding mothers that they aren’t alone, Loving Hands strives to transform Mother’s Day from a day of unthinkable grief to one of support and healing.

A Grieving Mother Becomes a Leader

In 2008, Loving Hands Community Care, Inc. was founded by Kathy Wooten, a Los Angeles mother who lost two sons to gang violence earlier that year. Since then, she has become a leader within her community and a beacon of strength and guidance for others whose children have passed away. Although Loving Hands was originally founded out of Wooten’s experience as a mother, the organization provides a variety of resources and support to all members of these grieving families. Through support groups, events for affected siblings, and weekly outreach events, Loving Hands provides an empathetic community for bereaved families. In recent years, the organization has expanded its reach beyond families traumatized by gang violence, to include those throughout the Los Angeles area who have experienced similar loss.

From Anguish to Action

Through outreach events such as the Mother’s Day healing luncheon, Loving Hands is dedicated to building empathy and connection where anger and divisiveness have long held sway. In recent years, the luncheon has brought together women from all three housing developments in Watts, despite a history of conflicts that have traditionally divided those communities. It is by building unity in this way that Loving Hands inspires mothers to join together to move beyond their crippling grief and to use their shared strength as a platform to open dialogue and seek resolutions to  complex issues their families and communities face.
