In 2010, author David Kipen opened Libros Schmibros in the underserved Boyle Heights community to bring free books to people of all ages, backgrounds, and means. The library has since evolved into a gathering place for inspiring thought and conversation, and it furthers its mission beyond its walls with a blog and a podcastis shared beyond its walls with a blog and a podcast. In its first dozen years, Libros Schmibros has welcomed 40,000 patrons and circulated 50,000 books in Boyle Heights, and the library continues to grow as a community resource for books and conversations that help to improve and change lives.
