Salk Institute for Biological Studies

Founding the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in 1963 was a triumph for Jonas Salk, second only to his development of the polio vaccine in 1955. Located in San Diego, California, the Salk Institute is home to several centers that operate with a small, tightly connected group of scientists who innovate in such areas as neuroscience, cancer research, aging, and immunobiology. An architectural wonder, the institute also contains on-campus facilities called "cores," which provide laboratory environments for trained experts and scientists participating in trailblazing research projects that lead to world-changing discoveries and cures. 

Collaboration is a critical component to the research conducted at Salk, and the nonprofit organization joins forces with other research institutes and physicians, including those at University of California, San Diego and the Jennifer Moreno Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center. The Salk Institute also hosts seminars and lectures to share important discoveries and engage general audiences and the research community alike. The Salk Education Outreach department serves students in the San Diego area through core programs designed to teach students about scientific literacy and promote interest in advanced levels of science. From conquering cancer to promoting creative initiatives to combat climate change, the Salk Institute is committed to respecting and understanding science and the role of biological research in our world.
