Reimagining Urban Recreational Spaces

South Portland Skatepark

The city of South Portland is a coastal community in southern Maine, encompassing an area of 12.93 square miles. Often referred to as two cities, South Portland is a diverse blend of business and industrial properties in the western half of the city and residential and open public spaces in the eastern half. The city itself places tremendous value on providing recreational sports and activities that enrich the quality of life for its residents while creating an active sense of community. The city's parks, comprised of a distinctive mix of open outdoor spaces and wooded areas, play a vital role in the recreational services and programs offered to South Portland residents.

In August 2018, the South Portland City Council formed an ad-hoc Skatepark Advisory Committee. The committee, comprised of district, city, and community representatives, will work diligently and collaboratively to bring the city's first public skatepark from inception to approval. Its mission is to create a piece of art for the overall community while offering a space for skateboarders and bikers to actively commune and connect. Bringing a state-of-the-art skatepark to the city of South Portland aligns with the community's belief that vibrant, outdoor spaces contribute considerably to the physical and mental health and well-being of its residents.
