New Museum of Contemporary Art

The New Museum of Contemporary Art was founded in 1977 by Marcia Tucker, who previously served as a curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art. In her work, Tucker witnessed the challenges of integrating living artists' creations into museum collections. Thus, her vision was to create a space that specifically showcased art created within approximately a decade of the current moment. When the New Museum of Contemporary Art opened its doors in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, it became the first contemporary art museum in New York City founded since World War II.

Though the museum's location has changed and the details of its space have transformed over time, the New Museum of Contemporary Art remains dedicated to displaying newly created art that exposes audiences to fresh perspectives. Its exhibitions and initiatives reflect a free flow of ideas and emphasize diverse, often underrepresented, viewpoints.
