Spreading the "Spirit of Swing"

Jazz at Lincoln Center

In 1987, Lincoln Center initiated a summer concert series titled Classical Jazz, which sought to incorporate American music into the organization's repertoire and expand its programming. After four summers of popular concerts, the series evolved into an official department: Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC). In 2004, JALC established the world's first venue designed specifically for jazz, and it has since hosted more than 2 million people from across the world. Central to JALC's work is the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, which is led by world-renowned musician Wynton Marsalis and tours across the globe. In addition to the Orchestra, JALC offers webcasts, extensive educational programming, and performance spaces such as Rose Theater, the Appel Room, and Dizzy's Club.
