In 1996, business executive Harry Leibowitz was watching the announcement of that year's Pulitzer Prize winners when he realized that while awards existed for exceptional art, literature, and journalism (Pulitzer) and science and peace (Nobel), no such recognition existed for the changemakers helping children in need. He and his wife, Kay Isaacson-Leibowitz, established World of Children, a global recognition and funding program that focuses on organizations who support vulnerable youth by awarding grants through five pillars: crisis, humanitarian, protecting, health, and education.
Since 1998, World of Children has directed more than $15 million to almost 130 organizations in more than 70 countries to fund impactful programs that address the most critical issues facing under-resourced children. Upon nomination, each potential honoree is vetted by an independent global security firm in order to ensure the quality and impact of their work. The New York Times has called these awards "the Nobel Prize for Child Advocates."
