Training Promising Musicians for Success

UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music

The only dedicated music school in the University of California system, the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music was formally renamed in 2016 after a generous contribution from the Herb Alpert Foundation. Prior to the creation of the school, UCLA's musicology department was housed in the College of Letters and Sciences, while the ethnomusicology department belonged to the College of Fine Arts. Today, the Herb Alpert School of Music is home to three departments: ethnomusicology, music, and musicology. The school also offers two specialized programs, Global Jazz Studies and Music Industry, as well as 15 degree programs and 45 performance ensembles. An impressive 4:1 student-to-faculty ratio enables students to gain an intensive, personalized, and interdisciplinary music education at the UCLA campus in Westwood.
