Elevating Native Cultures, Past and Present

School for Advanced Research

Formerly known as the School of American Research, the School for Advanced Research (SAR) in Sante Fe, New Mexico was founded in 1907 as a center for archaeological research in the Americas. In the decades since, SAR has undergone several changes, including relocating in the 1970s to a 15-acre campus. Its focus also shifted to include advanced seminars and a resident scholar program focusing on anthropology and related social sciences.

Today, SAR is committed to innovative social science research and collaborative stewardship of its impressive Native American art collection with Indigenous communities. In addition, SAR offers three artist-in-residence fellowships and eight writer-in-residence fellowships for Native American artists and authors each year. SAR's extensive educational programming includes classes, lectures, and exhibitions that transcend anthropology and archeology to cover broader social issues, all designed to foster understanding of the human experience.
