David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA has been at the forefront of medicine and education since its founding in 1951. Formerly known as the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine, the teaching hospital ran the world's first willed-body program, which allowed people to leave their bodies for scientific research upon death, and has pioneered advancements in computerized tomography, tissue matching, AIDS research, and heart transplantation.

In 2002, the school was renamed after entertainment executive and philanthropist David Geffen, who made an unrestricted donation of $200 million to the medical school that represented the largest-ever single gift to an American school of medicine. The David Geffen School of Medicine continues to be a leader in education and research. One such department is the award-winning UCLA Vatche and Tamar Manoukian Division of Digestive Diseases, which is a leading diagnostic, treatment, and research center focused on developing unique approaches to gastrointestinal disorders. From studying celiac disease to combating obesity to researching HIV prevention, the Division of Digestive Diseases produces creative and comprehensive approaches to a wide variety of health concerns.
