The Science Museum's original collection was first displayed at London's South Kensington Museum (SKM), which opened in 1852 and moved to its current location in 1857. SKM changed its name in 1909 to the Victoria & Albert Museum and retained the art collection, while the science and engineering collections moved to an adjacent building and formed the basis for the Science Museum.
Today, the institution features a robust slate of exhibitions and compelling objects, all of which illustrate centuries of scientific achievement. Visitors of all ages are encouraged to participate in interactive programming, which sheds light on topics ranging from Europe's earliest clockmaking to the historically interdependent relationship between science and art. The Science Museum offers educational visits for students, online curriculum-based classroom resources, an extensive research library, and a collection of 380,000 objects from the museum and its partners that can be explored online.
