The Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (ICA LA) was established in 1988 as the Santa Monica Museum of Art. In 2017, the museum reinvented itself, emerging with a new name and location in downtown L.A. Despite this transformation, the institution remains committed to its mission: to support contemporary art that sparks discovery and challenges our perceptions of ourselves and others. ICA LA specializes in creating exhibitions, education programs, and community partnerships that dismantle race, class, and gender-based hierarchies while encouraging audiences to empathize with new ways of understanding the world. Through this multifaceted work, ICA LA uplifts marginalized voices, illuminates untold stories, and elevates emerging figures in contemporary art and culture.
