Imagining Intersections between Photography and Society

International Center of Photography

The International Center of Photography (ICP) was founded in 1974 by Hungarian American photographer Cornell Capa to preserve the legacy of "concerned photography," which is defined as "socially and politically minded images that can educate and change the world." ICP offers an open forum for dialogue to explore the role that photographs, videos, and new media play in society and how they can impact social change. With a collection of 200,000-plus prints — ranging from early daguerreotypes to contemporary photographs — ICP has presented more than 700 exhibitions from 3,000 photographers. In addition, the School at ICP serves more than 3,500 students each year, providing an education in photography through workshops, entry-level courses, and master's degree programs.
