Teaching through Teamwork

Golden Gate Philharmonic

The Golden Gate Philharmonic (GGP) was founded in 1995 by music teacher Joan Murray to address the increasing deficit in music-education programming in San Francisco's public school system. Today, the GGP enrolls approximately 100 students from the San Francisco Bay Area each year for performance-driven music education. The organization's faculty members teach music to kindergarten through 12th-grade students in a supportive and intimate atmosphere that builds camaraderie and community.

The GGP offers experiences in full orchestral training, section rehearsals, chamber music, theory classes, concert and recital performances, and music camp retreats. Performances include community events at such locations as the Inn at the Presidio, the Carlton Hotel, and the Guardsmen Christmas Tree Lot. The GGP is committed to equal opportunity and provides scholarship support to about 20 percent of its students, believing that every musically inclined child deserves a first-rate education and training ground.
