SFFILM was founded primarily to produce the San Francisco International Film Festival, which launched in 1957 and is now the longest-running event of its kind on the continent. The organization — which absorbed the San Francisco-based Film Arts Foundation in 2008 — offers public film programming in addition to the film festival, including the documentary series Doc Stories. SFFILM also invests in youth education via special screenings, workshops, and camps that service more than 13,000 area students and educators. inspired by San Francisco's long history as a center for conversation, creativity, and change, the organization also champions artist development by providing artist grants, residences and individualized support to help the filmmakers of today and tomorrow reach their potential.
