Encouraging Specialized Art Expertise

The Courtauld

The Courtauld Institute of Art is an independent college of the University of London, dedicated to researching and training a new generation of scholars in the history and conservation of art and architecture. The Courtauld was established in 1932 as one of the world's first art history institutions, paving the way for the discipline's ascension in the academic world. The institute offers a broad array of subjects at the undergraduate, graduate, and PhD levels, including history of art, conservation of easel paintings, wall painting conservation, Buddhist art, and curating the art museum. Through this expansive environment for learning, professional development, and research, the Courtauld is an important establishment in an evolving international community of art specialists.

The Courtauld Gallery is home to one of the UK's most impressive art collections, which spans from the Renaissance to present day. In particular, the Courtauld is famous for its holdings of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces, including Vincent Van Gogh's Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Édouard Manet's A Bar at the Folies-Bergère.
