The Art Students League of New York was founded in 1875 by students who broke away from the National Academy of Design. The institution's independent values are still deeply aligned with this founding moment, which is demonstrated by their dedication to providing students with an education that is nonconforming and unrestrained by dogma. The Art Students League encourages its students of all ages to pursue unconventional styles of education through affordable classes and workshops taught by a range of successful artists. All instructors are internationally recognized artists who teach different artistic philosophies and strategies. Notable alumni of the Art Students League include such acclaimed artists Jackson Pollock, Norman Rockwell, Georgia O'Keefe, and Ai Weiwei.
