Equal Justice Initiative

Since its founding in 1989, the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) has become a national powerhouse in the ongoing fight for racial and economic justice, through advocacy against mass incarceration and excessive punishment, and by defending some of America’s most vulnerable populations.

In the News

On April 26, 2018, EJI opened both the National Memorial for Peace and Justice and the Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration. The institutions are located minutes away from each other in Montgomery, Alabama. The National Memorial for Peace and Justice is the first of its kind –  dedicated to victims of lynching and public torture throughout America’s complex and challenging history. The Legacy Museum is an in-depth exploration of the history of racial violence, segregation, slavery, and modern mass incarceration. The Museum itself is constructed on the former site of one of America’s largest slave markets, where structures for warehousing and transporting slaves once stood.

Demanding Recognition With Past and Present Injustices

EJI was founded in 1989 by Bryan Stevenson, a widely renowned public interest lawyer who has been recognized for his impactful work defending historically marginalized groups and championing criminal justice reform. Since its founding, EJI has expanded to focus on four key issues: racial justice, children in prison, mass incarceration, and the death penalty. Through each of these areas of focus, the organization strives to transform American notions and discussions about race and poverty, provide legal representation to the wrongfully convicted, and advocate for the abolishment of excessive punishment policies, including the death penalty. Additionally, EJI has been instrumental in efforts to reform the way in which underage children are treated and prosecuted within the criminal justice system.
